Ovarian rejuvenation therapy is a new procedure that has the potential to help women with specific fertility issues who would like to conceive a child that is biologically their own rather than adopt or use donor eggs to conceive. These issues are early menopause, low egg (oocyte) reserves, or women who are beyond optimal maternal age (over 35). The procedure is intended to increase their egg reserves to then be used in IVF procedures.
What is ovarian rejuvenation therapy?
Ovarian rejuvenation therapy is a procedure where a preparation of the patients own blood cells are injected into their ovaries. It is unknown exactly how it works but it is speculated that growth factors in the blood cells trigger stem cells in the ovaries to become new follicles that develop into egg cells. Stem cells are found in all parts of the body and are able to become any type of cell found in the body.
Is the procedure safe?
Since the procedure is performed with the patient’s own blood there is no chance for rejection. The stem cells that are triggered by the growth factors in the blood are naturally present in the ovaries and so no outside substances or drugs are required for the process to work. Therefore the procedure is perfectly safe with the only negative effects being temporary discomfort or pain, internal bleeding, and low risk for infection.
How is ovarian rejuvenation therapy performed?
Blood is drawn from the patient and the red blood cells are separated from the white blood cells and platelets in a centrifuge to produce PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). This PRP is then injected into the ovaries via the vagina and guided by ultrasound. This injection is very similar to the technique used to retrieve eggs for the IVF procedure.
